Happy Tails

10/01/2025

We all know that Mauritius is a beautiful destination with paradise beaches and turquoise lagoons but there are also plenty of places to visit while you’re on holiday. Beyond the beaches and lagoons, you’ll find a plethora of attractions. From temples to wildlife and quad biking to sky diving there is lots to explore and do. This excursion however is a little bit different and it’s to Happy Tails Dog Sanctuary. This sanctuary is not just a refuge for stray and abandoned dogs but also a place where compassion and hope thrive. My visit there was an eye-opening experience, and I’m excited to share how tourists can play a part in supporting their noble mission.

A Warm Welcome at Happy Tails

Nestled in a quiet corner of Mauritius near Baie du Cap in the southwest of Mauritius, Happy Tails Dog Sanctuary greeted me with wagging tails and friendly barks. From the moment I stepped in, I could feel the love and dedication from its’ founder Nathalie Cowham that fuels this haven. The sanctuary’s small staff, a passionate group of animal lovers, shared their stories and introduced me to the dogs, each with their unique journey.

Happy Tails provides refuge to over 120 dogs, many rescued from the streets and life as a stray to some rescued from dire circumstances. Some were abandoned, others injured, and a few simply lost. Here, they receive medical care, nutritious food, and a safe environment to heal and thrive.

A Day at the Sanctuary

My visit began with a tour of the facilities. The sanctuary is thoughtfully designed, with clean kennels, spacious pens for groups of dogs, and a big outside exercise area. As I walked through, I couldn’t help but notice how happy and healthy the dogs looked—a testament to the incredible care they receive.

One of the highlights was spending time with the dogs. Whether it was tossing a ball, giving belly rubs, or just sitting quietly as they lounged beside me, every moment felt rewarding. The staff encouraged me to interact with the more timid dogs, helping them build trust with humans. It was heartwarming to see their gradual transformation.

How Tourists Can Help

Visiting Happy Tails Dog Sanctuary is not only a unique experience but also a meaningful way to contribute to animal welfare in Mauritius. Here are some ways tourists can help:

Visit and Volunteer: Spending 2 hours at the sanctuary is a wonderful way to support their work. Tourists can assist with tasks like feeding, cleaning, or simply playing with the dogs. The dedicated team will guide you through the sanctuary and introduce you to all the wagging tails and loving souls who call Happy Tails home.

Adopt a Dog: If you’re looking to bring home a furry friend, consider adopting from Happy Tails. The sanctuary facilitates adoptions both locally and internationally, ensuring each dog finds a loving and responsible home.

Donate: Every little bit helps. Financial contributions go a long way in covering medical expenses, food, and maintenance costs. The sanctuary also welcomes donations of supplies like dog food, toys, and blankets. You can make a donation directly through PayPal.

Spread the Word: Share your experience with friends and family. The more people learn about Happy Tails, the more support they can garner for their mission.

A Lasting Impression

Leaving Happy Tails was bittersweet. While I was sad to say goodbye to the dogs, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the sanctuary’s work. They’re not just saving lives but also fostering a culture of compassion and responsibility toward animals in Mauritius.
