Hiking Le Morne

For five years I have wanted to climb the iconic Le Morne mountain which overlooks the peninsula located on the south west corner of Mauritius - home to two of our top hotels - the Paradis and Dinarobin...

Yet I was always unsure of what was required in terms of fitness, clothing, distance, difficulty and the time required to ascend to the top !

Well, last week at 06:15 am with 19 keen travel agents in tow we were picked up from the Dinarobin by Elizabeth the PR executive from our ground agent Mautourco and coached to the base of the mountain where an experienced and excellent guide briefed us on safety and what lay ahead!

For the next two hours, with sturdy shoes a must, we walked through beautiful forest and along tracks to the halfway point overlooking the west and southwest coasts of Mauritius as the sun came up..... just magic! En route, we regularly stopped for updates on flora and fauna, the history of Le Morne and information on Mauritius.

I would say to scale half the mountain (250 metres) you only need an average level of fitness but to go to the top (556 metres) you need bravery, another 2 hours and be far fitter than myself.

The cost for half the mountain was about £20-25 per person based on the 20 people we had and for the full mountain its in the region of £35 per person again depending on numbers. Water is provided although you do need walking boots and light clothing.
