To promote water conservation, Beachcomber Hotels:

Implements a Linen Change Card Policy, encouraging Guests to reuse bed linen and towels, and recommending showers instead of baths.

• Uses 100% recycled wastewater for irrigation purposes.

• Prioritises landscaping designs that favour endemic plants, sand and rocks to reduce irrigation needs.

• Explores alternatives for potable water provision, including desalination plants at Le Morne Peninsula and Trou aux Biches Beachcomber.

• Favours rainwater harvesting systems that divert rainfall into storage tanks.

• Performs regular pool water quality monitoring using automated control systems to reduce the frequency and duration of backwashing.

• Reduces water wastage by using automatic sensor faucets in all Artisan zones.

Has installed water meters at strategic locations to effectively monitor water usage. Aerators are fitted to taps and showerheads, optimising flow to six litres per minute. In addition, all guest rooms and public areas are equipped with dual-flush toilets, and push buttons have been installed on beach showers.

To reduce energy consumption, Beachcomber Hotels:

• Sets air-conditioning temperatures at a minimum of 22°C to ensure energy efficiency without compromising Guest comfort.

• Promotes renewable energy by installing photovoltaic panels on hotel buildings, contributing an average of 5% green energy per hotel. To date, 3,090 panels have been installed.

• Uses variable speed drives on energy-intensive equipment and prioritises solar water heaters coupled with heat recovery chillers to reduce fossil fuel consumption.

• Controls kitchen energy consumption through electric load management and centralised cold room systems.

• Favours natural lighting and applies thermal insulation to roofs to reduce irradiation effects and achieve up to 5°C cooling.

• Optimises energy use through LED and solar lighting, and progressively implements Room Energy Management systems, including motion sensors, door switches and outdoor lighting timers.

• Introduces energy-saving features that encourage Guests to switch off lights and air-conditioning when leaving their rooms.

To manage waste responsibly, Beachcomber Hotels:

• Upcycles old bed linen into laundry bags or uses environmentally friendly alternatives.

• Segregates and recycles nearly 60% of its waste, including plastic, cardboard, paper, cans, Nespresso capsules, candles, cooking oil, electronic waste and batteries. The group also collaborates with local farmers to recycle all organic waste.

• Embraces the circular economy by operating a composting site at Paradis Beachcomber, diverting green waste from landfill and reusing compost across business units.

• Eliminates single-use plastic in mini-bars and encourages both Artisans and Guests to participate in waste segregation through tri-bins available in rooms and public areas.

• Pioneers the bulk purchase of cooking oil in Mauritius, eliminating tonnes of single-use plastic packaging and cartons.

• Installs in-house water bottling plants across all hotels.

• Partners with FoodWise to distribute surplus food to nearby communities.

To support and develop surrounding communities, Beachcomber Hotels:

Organises awareness sessions for key stakeholders operating on hotel premises, including beach hawkers and taxi drivers.

• Assists and funds NGOs dedicated to community development through Fondation Espoir Développement (FED), established in 1999.

• Establishes regional committees to empower communities and support social and environmental projects.

• Promotes Mauritian craftsmanship through the Beautiful Localhands initiative.

• Supports the employability of 300 youths from vulnerable backgrounds each year through the Youth Employability Project (PEJ), launched in 2001. To date, more than 3,500 young people have benefited.

• Provides educational support to children and funds schools designed to enhance academic performance.

• Implements the “Vulnerable Lives Matter” project, launched in 2021 with EU funding, supporting women entrepreneurs, youths and individuals with disabilities.

• Maximises local employment, with the majority of Artisans living within a 20 km radius of its hotels.

To ensure ethical and sustainable procurement, Beachcomber Hotels:

• Prioritises eco-friendly products such as cleaning supplies, bathroom amenities and FSC-certified paper.

• Engages suppliers by sharing its Environmental and Social Policy and Sustainable Purchasing Policy, selecting partners based on their commitment to environmental responsibility.

• Favours Made in Moris products to support local entrepreneurship.

• Purchases ozone-friendly refrigeration equipment to minimise environmental impact.

• Selects low energy-consumption appliances for all new purchases.

To involve Artisans in its sustainability journey, Beachcomber Hotels:

• Encourages Artisan participation in global awareness events such as World Water Day, World Environment Day and Earth Day.

• Establishes Green Team Committees within each hotel and at Head Office to monitor and improve commitments through a Sustainable Action Plan.

• Mentors new recruits on sustainable development during onboarding and encourages participation in EarthCheck Awareness training.

• Provides biodiversity and marine life training for Boathouse Artisans through Reef Conservation programmes.

• Promotes eco-responsible practices through posters, stickers, Green Tours, corporate videos and internal communications.

To encourage Guest participation in sustainability efforts, Beachcomber Hotels:

• Informs Guests about the 52 Commitments to Sustainability through multiple communication channels.

• Invites Guests to contribute to the Top FED Programme through a symbolic donation added to their bill.

• Offers junior Guests a “Be Eco-Friendly” activity and participation in the Beautiful Neighbours initiative.
• Shares local culture through the Beautiful Story ritual and signature shows such as Wild Island and Tropical India.
• Provides eco-responsible snorkelling trips and promotes non-motorised water sports, including paddle yoga at selected hotels.
• Promotes the sale of Beautiful Local hands products in hotel boutiques.
• Encourages Guests to participate in environmental initiatives and Green Tours.
