Why Maldives Marine Life Is Truly Exceptional
Surrounded by blue lagoons and coral reefs, each island offers access to extraordinary marine life. These waters create the perfect setting for snorkelling and diving experiences.
Marine Encounters
The Maldives is home to a rich marine ecosystem, with different species found in distinct atolls, reefs and channels depending on currents, depth and season.
Whale sharks are the largest resident species, often seen in warm plankton-rich waters as they feed near reef edges and deeper offshore zones. Manta rays are another signature encounter, frequently gliding in nutrient-rich currents, particularly during seasonal plankton blooms.
Turtles, mainly green and hawksbill, are commonly found grazing on seagrass beds or resting on coral reefs, often encountered on snorkelling trips directly from the shore.
Reef sharks such as blacktip and whitetip species are regularly seen patrolling reef slopes and lagoon drop-offs, especially during low light hours when they hunt.
Across the reefs, snorkellers and divers may also encounter dolphins, eagle rays, moray eels, parrotfish, triggerfish and barracuda, forming part of a vibrant and constantly active reef ecosystem.
Fun fact
The Maldives’ reefs cover under 1% of the Indian Ocean but support over 1,000 fish species and 200 coral species, making even a short snorkel highly diverse.

Coral Reef Ecosystems
The Maldives sits on one of the world’s most complex coral atoll systems, where reefs are structured into distinct zones shaped by waves, depth and light. The most important are reef flats (shallow, lagoon-facing areas), reef crests (wave-battered edges), and outer reef slopes or “drop-offs” (deep-water walls rich in coral and marine life).
Together, these reef zones create a layered ecosystem: calm lagoons and house reefs ideal for snorkelling, and dramatic outer reefs that support larger marine species and strong coral growth in deeper waters.
Insider tip
The richest reef encounters are at lagoon-to-drop-off edges, especially early or late in the day when currents attract turtles, reef sharks and dense shoals of fish.

World-Class Snorkelling & Diving
The Maldives offers holidaymakers direct access to exceptional snorkelling and diving straight from resort house reefs or via short boat excursions, with warm, clear waters and visibility often exceeding 30 metres.
Maldives resorts are typically designed around the ocean experience, with many offering on-site dive centres, guided snorkelling safaris, and PADI/SSI-certified instruction for all levels, from complete beginners to experienced divers.
Guests can easily encounter turtles, reef sharks and tropical fish while snorkelling from the beach, while curated dive trips explore deeper reefs and channels where manta rays and whale sharks may be seen seasonally.
With many rooms positioned right next to house reefs, the Maldives delivers a seamless “step into the ocean” holiday experience.
Insider tip :
Most Maldives resorts provide complimentary snorkelling gear for the duration of your stay, so you can head straight from your villa to the house reef at any time
PERFECT FOR :
Perfect for adventure and nature enthusiasts, couples or families who want easy access to world-class snorkelling, diving and marine life right from their resort.
Marine hotspots
The Maldives is a world-class marine hotspot network built across 26 atolls, where different regions specialise in distinct snorkelling and diving experiences depending on currents, reef structure and seasonal marine life patterns.

South Ari Atoll (Alifu Dhaalu)
Most reliable global hotspot for whale sharks year-round, especially around Maamigili and Dhigurah reef edge. Strong manta ray sightings and abundant reef life on outer reef slopes and marine protected areas

Baa Atoll (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve)
Famous for Hanifaru Bay manta aggregations, where hundreds of manta rays gather during plankton blooms (May–Nov). Rich coral reefs and channel dives supporting turtles, reef fish and pelagics

North Malé Atoll (Central Atolls)
Easily accessible reef system with iconic sites like Banana Reef and Manta Point. Strong mix of reef sharks, eagle rays, moray eels and coral overhangs, ideal for beginners and advanced divers

Far South Atolls (Addu & Gaafu)
Less visited, offering pristine reefs, wreck diving and large pelagic species, including reef sharks and occasional oceanic encounters

Lhaviyani Atoll
Known for some of the Maldives’ healthiest coral systems, with frequent sightings of turtles, reef sharks and eagle rays on house reefs and channels
