Seaplanes, Soft Sands and Slow Days

Denise Jaye, a former employee at Beachcomber Tours, shares her recent experience of staying at Adaaran Select Meedhapparu in the Maldives, offering an honest insight into what it’s really like from arrival through to departure.

Arrival to the Maldives

Arrival into Malé was quick and easy, with smooth immigration and fast luggage collection. We were met and taken to the domestic terminal, then transferred by minibus to the seaplane terminal. There, we waited in a bright, spacious lounge with balconies overlooking the runway, plenty of seating, optional showers, and complimentary drinks and snacks.

The seaplane journey was well organised and offered stunning views over turquoise waters. On arrival, we were greeted with music and flower garlands, then taken by golf buggy for a swift check in and a cold drink. Once connected to the resort link, daily updates about activities were sent straight to our phones.

Our deluxe room was about fifteen steps from the sea and had its own sunbeds. It was spacious, well equipped, and slightly rustic, which suited the island perfectly. It was kept spotless by our excellent room attendant. The bed was huge and very comfortable, facing the beach with a beautiful view. The outdoor shower, set within a private walled area, was refreshing after a day in the sun, even if it ran more cool than hot. Small touches, like a bowl of water on the terrace to rinse sandy feet, made a difference.

Snorkelling in paradise

The beaches were stunning, with soft white sand like icing sugar in places. It took around thirty minutes to walk around the island. Snorkelling was excellent straight from the beach, with clear water and plenty of fish, even in shallow areas. Reef sharks could often be seen passing by. The area under the pier near reception was a highlight, deeper water filled with swarms of fish, like swimming in an aquarium. Snorkelling equipment was available to borrow free of charge.

Wine and Dine

Food was very good, with a wide choice, all freshly made and regularly topped up. The main buffet restaurant, Jaafaiy, offered themed nights and plenty of variety, with Mexican night being a standout. At lunch, there was a sandwich station serving made to order paninis and toasties. The Indian restaurant, Sufura, was excellent, with standout tandoori dishes, and was also open for breakfast and lunch. Thavaa, a smaller waiter service restaurant by the beach, was worth booking early. Although some dishes carried a charge, there were plenty included, and we managed to visit twice. Cafe Mass was a great spot for lighter lunches, pizzas, and coffee.

There were several bars around the island, including the pool bar, sunset bar, and Cafe Mass bar. The cocktail bar, Albino, set among the trees by the beach, had a lovely atmosphere and great drinks. The main bar also served a wide range of ice cream, ideal after lunch or time by the pool. Staff across the island were friendly and welcoming. Evening entertainment was low key, with something on most nights at the main bar. We also enjoyed a jazz musician at Cafe Mass on a few evenings.

Leaving in style

Departure was well organised. We were given clear instructions the evening before, including luggage collection and meeting times. We were taken to the jetty and then by speedboat to a floating platform to board the seaplane, which felt very James Bond!

Overall, it was an amazing holiday, and I could go on and on. We met so many returning guests, and now I completely understand why. We’re already hoping to come back next year! I also recommend joining the Adaaran Select Meedhapparu Facebook group for useful tips and photos.
